Music Academy

Music instruction at Wake Forest Academy of Fine Arts consists of private piano or voice lessons. Students may receive a weekly half hour or hour lesson. All instruction is centered upon personal goals and fulfillment. Students will learn about music theory and performance in the genre of his/her choice: classical, broadway, pop, rock, jazz, country, etc.

Classical techniques are used for fundamental skills and tailored to suit the needs of the student. Ages 6 and up for piano. Ages 12 and up recommended for vocal instruction. Beginners welcome!

Lesson materials are recommended upon consultation and registration is $25.00 per family. Instructor of voice & piano: Director of Music, Barbara A. Outterson.

One hour weekly: $180.00 per month
Half-hour weekly: $98.00 per month

Barbara A. Outterson, Director of Music

Barbara Outterson, Director of Music at the Wake Forest Academy of Fine Arts, received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York. Prior to college, she also studied Voice and Music Theory at the David Hochstein School of Music. She has been performing publicly since age six as a church cantor and soloist, as well as in various choral tours, and numerous musical theatre and operatic productions.

Barbara has been teaching voice privately since the spring of 1994 and teaching piano privately since her arrival at Wake Forest Academy in the summer of 1999. She remained active in performance until the autumn of 2011 as a member of the North Carolina Master Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Alfred E. Sturgis. In addition, Barbara acted as Chorus Manager for the 180-member Symphonic Choir. The chorus performs regularly with the North Carolina Symphony. She now spends former performance hours with her family.
